A Non Earth Day, Earth Day Article… The Removement Way
Although earth day was about a week ago, our love for the planet should not just be limited to one day. To keep your climate love going, we wanted to bring you a non-earth day, earth day article.
A Brief History of Earth Day and Why it Matters:
Another year around the sun means another celebration of Global Earth Day. As we commemorate 52 years of this hallmark day, the question persists; what are the origins of Earth Day and why all the fuss?
Well, originally Earth Day was established in 1970 by US Senator Gaylor Nelson as a day to make protecting the environment a national priority. The first-ever Earth Day aimed at two things:
1) To engage people who didn’t see themselves as environmentalists
2) To deepen the commitment of people who already recognize that climate change is a problem.
Great! So Earth Day got a bunch of people engaged in environmental issues. But how did it become the global phenomena it is today? (Surprise surprise, it was a multi stakeholder approach).
Collective Climate Action:
Since that day, 52 years ago, an organization called Earthday.org dedicated itself to activating the earth day movement globally. Around the year, the organization collaborates with businesses, governments and citizens to diversify, educate and spread this movement globally.
Every year, Earthday.org provides an overarching theme, where it partners with We Don't Have Time to host the annual Exponential Climate Action Summit that brings together thought leaders to push the environmental agenda.
By tackling topics ranging from Climate Literacy, Conservation and Restoration, Regenerative Agriculture and sustainable fashion, EarthDay.org has turned this landmark occasion into a movement for global climate action and benchmarking.
