There are a number of different ways to remove carbon from the atmosphere, all with different possibilities and potential. New methods are being developed every day in this dynamic area. All the methods we support are verified to remove the amount of carbon that they claim.
Skymining is a Swedish company that contributes to reversing global warming by mining coal from the world’s single largest coal reserve - the atmosphere. Coal is used to create sustainable products in the form of CO2e negative biofuels, food and fiber.
Skymining does this by planting specialized plants, so-called C4 grasses, which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air in a verified cultivation process (DNV). Skymining’s solution is as effective as the photosynthesis itself that drives it. The grass Skymining uses is particularly suitable for absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and binding it in the leaves of the plant itself and in the soil through the roots of the grass. A direct consequence of this is that the soil quality improves, which over time restores the soil and creates fertile soil.
Skymining applies a regenerative agricultural model, which improves biodiversity and creates sustainable ecosystems in the places where the company is active.
Nori initiates, sells, monitors, and follows up projects at disclosed farms. They work with independent, third party verifiers with experience and accreditation working on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduction projects. Farmers are paired with a verifier to review their carbon removal data and supply any additional evidence required, and the verifier submits a report of their findings to Nori.
Carbon removal in agriculture includes various ways of managing land, especially agricultural land, so that the land absorbs and holds more carbon instead of being responsible for a large proportion of our emissions as it is today. 14% of Sweden's emissions come from agriculture. Globally, that figure is over 18%.
Running Tide is an ocean technology company built to tackle climate change. They build systems that tap into the enormous potential of the ocean to produce food, remove carbon from the atmosphere, and rebuild broken ecosystems.
The methodology takes products from nature-based agricultural and forestry waste products and processes them into substrates on which macroalgae can grow, fixing even more carbon in the marine environment. These buoys, if you will, are inoculated with macroalgae seed, loaded onto ocean-going vessels and taken far offshore, where macroalgae growth will occur in open ocean waters. After a time, the terrestrial biomass will become infiltrated with seawater and sink. When this occurs, the carbon embodied in the biomass will travel together to the deep ocean where it will be durably stored.
